Image Resizing Guide: Optimal Dimensions for Web and Social Media

Why image dimensions matter

Large images increase page load time. According to Google's Core Web Vitals, LCP (Largest Contentful Paint) should be under 2.5 seconds. Large images negatively affect LCP.

Small images cause quality loss. Over-compressed or low-resolution images look blurry and unprofessional.

The right dimensions optimize both quality and performance. Each use case has ideal dimensions.

Optimal dimensions for websites

Hero/banner image: 1920x1080 pixels (16:9), 200-400 KB. Ideal for full-screen cover images.

Blog cover image: 1200x628 pixels (1.91:1), 100-200 KB. Also usable for social media sharing.

Content image: 800x600 pixels, 50-150 KB. Sufficient for in-article images.

Thumbnail: 300x200 pixels, 20-50 KB. For list and gallery views.

Logo: 200x50 pixels (or vector SVG), 10-30 KB. For header and footer.

Favicon: 32x32 or 16x16 pixels, ICO/PNG format.

Optimal dimensions for social media

Instagram: Square 1080x1080, Portrait 1080x1350, Story 1080x1920 pixels.

Facebook: Cover 820x312, Post 1200x630, Profile 170x170 pixels.

Twitter/X: Header 1500x500, Post 1200x675, Profile 400x400 pixels.

LinkedIn: Cover 1584x396, Post 1200x627, Profile 400x400 pixels.

YouTube: Thumbnail 1280x720, Channel cover 2560x1440 pixels.

Pinterest: Pin 1000x1500 pixels (2:3 ratio).

Resizing tips

1. Lock aspect ratio: Preserve the aspect ratio to resize without distorting the image.

2. Retina/HiDPI: Use 2x resolution (e.g., 2400x1256 instead of 1200x628). Looks sharp on Retina displays.

3. Use WebP: WebP format is 25-35% smaller than JPEG. Modern browsers support it.

4. Lazy loading: Load below-the-fold images with lazy loading. Speeds up initial view.

5. Responsive images: Serve different sized images for different screen sizes (srcset).
