What is a QR Code and How to Create One?
QR codes (Quick Response) are two-dimensional barcodes that enable quick information transfer when scanned with a smartphone. This guide explains how QR codes work, the different types, and practical use cases.
Last updated:What is a QR code?
QR code is a two-dimensional barcode type developed by Denso Wave (a Toyota subsidiary) in 1994. While traditional barcodes carry information in one dimension, QR codes carry information both horizontally and vertically, storing up to 10 times more data.
QR codes can store URLs, text, phone numbers, email addresses, Wi-Fi information, vCards (contact info), and more. When scanned with a camera, the stored data becomes instantly accessible.
QR code types
URL QR code: Stores a website address. When scanned, the browser opens and redirects to the site. Most common use.
Wi-Fi QR code: Stores network name (SSID), password, and security type. When scanned, the phone automatically connects to the network.
vCard QR code: Stores contact information (name, phone, email, address, company). When scanned, it is saved to the address book. Can replace business cards.
Text QR code: Stores free text. When scanned, the text is displayed on screen. Used for menus, instructions, or information sharing.
Email/SMS QR code: Stores an email address or phone number with a pre-filled message. When scanned, the email/SMS app opens.
QR code creation tips
1. Size: QR code should be at least 2x2 cm. Very small codes cannot be scanned.
2. Contrast: Dark code on light background. Black and white is most reliable.
3. Error correction: QR codes have 7-30% error correction capacity. If you want to add a logo, choose high error correction (30%).
4. Quiet zone: At least 4 modules (units) of empty space around the QR code.
5. Test: Test the generated QR code with multiple devices and apps.
Use cases
Restaurants: Menu QR code - QR code on the table instead of physical menu.
Events: Ticket QR code - scanning at entry, no paper ticket needed.
E-commerce: Product page QR code - product info, user manual link on packaging.
Education: Homework and resource sharing - redirect to PDF, video, or website via QR code.
Healthcare: Patient information cards - access to medical information in emergencies.
