Web Performance Monitoring: RUM, Synthetic Monitoring and APM

Why Performance Monitoring Matters

Web performance directly affects user experience, conversion rates, and SEO rankings. Slow pages cause user loss and revenue loss.

Performance monitoring allows you to proactively detect issues. Notice and fix problems before users complain.

Two main approaches: RUM (real user data) and Synthetic Monitoring (controlled test environment). Both provide different information.

RUM (Real User Monitoring)

RUM collects performance data from real users' browsers. Metrics like Core Web Vitals (LCP, CLS, INP), page load time, TTFB.

RUM provides user segmentation: device type, browser, geographic location, connection speed. Detect which user groups experience problems.

Tools: Google Analytics (Core Web Vitals), web-vitals library, Datadog RUM, New Relic Browser, Sentry Performance.

Compare RUM data with CrUX (Chrome User Experience Report). Be aligned with Google's ranking factors.

Synthetic Monitoring

Synthetic monitoring simulates page loads in a controlled environment (bot). Tests from specific locations, on specific devices, at specific intervals.

Advantages: Consistent and repeatable tests. Detect performance regressions. Check SLA (Service Level Agreement) compliance.

Tools: Lighthouse CI, WebPageTest, Pingdom, GTmetrix, Catchpoint, Datadog Synthetic.

Synthetic monitoring detects problems that RUM misses (e.g., access issues from a specific location).

APM (Application Performance Monitoring)

APM monitors application code performance. Backend API response time, database query durations, external service calls.

Distributed tracing: Track requests across services. Detect which service is slow.

Tools: Datadog APM, New Relic APM, Dynatrace, AppDynamics, Sentry Performance.

APM combines frontend and backend performance. Provides end-to-end performance view.

Alerting and Thresholds

Alert rules: Define alerts for Core Web Vitals thresholds like LCP > 2.5s, CLS > 0.1, INP > 200ms.

Error budget: Define SLO (Service Level Objective). Monitor error budget consumption rate.

Anomaly detection: Create normal performance baseline. Automatically detect abnormal deviations.

Alert fatigue: Don't send too many alerts. Create only actionable alerts.

Performance Budget and CI/CD Integration

Performance budget: Define budget for page size, JS bundle size, LCP time. Fail build on budget exceed.

Lighthouse CI: Run Lighthouse audit on every PR. Check performance score threshold.

WebPageTest: WebPageTest integration into CI/CD pipeline. Automatically detect performance regressions.

Reporting: Visualize performance trends on dashboard. Create weekly/monthly performance report.
