Browser Privacy: Protect Your Data
Your web browser records a large portion of your online activity. This guide covers settings and tools to improve browser privacy.
Last updated:What data does your browser collect?
Cookies: Small files stored on your device by websites. Used for session management, preference remembering, and tracking.
Browsing history: Pages visited, search queries, and downloaded files.
Form data: Information entered in forms (name, address, credit card).
Location information: Your IP address and GPS (on mobile devices).
Device information: Operating system, browser version, screen resolution, installed fonts.
Privacy settings
Manage cookies: Block third-party cookies in browser settings. Keep first-party cookies (needed for site functionality).
Clear browsing history: Regularly clear browsing history, cookies, and cache.
Incognito/private mode: Deletes browsing history and cookies at session end. However, your IP address and ISP are still visible.
Do Not Track (DNT): Enable DNT in browser settings. Sites are not required to honor this signal, but many do.
Browser choice
Firefox: Open source, strong privacy settings, Enhanced Tracking Protection. Best option for privacy-focused users.
Brave: Chromium-based, built-in ad and tracking blocker. Strong privacy by default.
Safari: Apple's ITP (Intelligent Tracking Prevention) provides strong tracking protection. Ideal for Mac/iOS users.
Chrome: Integrated with Google's tracking infrastructure. Privacy settings need manual configuration. Most popular but least private.
Practical tips
1. Browser extensions: uBlock Origin (ad/tracking blocker), Privacy Badger (tracking blocker), HTTPS Everywhere (secure connection).
2. DNS: Use privacy-focused DNS like Cloudflare (1.1.1.1) or Quad9 (9.9.9.9).
3. VPN: Use a VPN on public Wi-Fi networks. Hides your IP address and encrypts traffic.
4. Fingerprint protection: Use browser settings or extensions for canvas, WebGL, and font fingerprint protection.
Utilgo and privacy
Utilgo processes most tools in the browser, your files are never sent to servers. IBAN validation, text processing, and calculators run entirely in the browser.
