IP and Network Tools Guide: IP Address, DNS, and Network Security
Network tools like IP address, DNS, ping, and traceroute are used to diagnose internet connection issues and ensure network security. This guide explains basic network concepts.
Last updated:What is an IP address?
IP (Internet Protocol) address is a unique identification number assigned to each device on a network. Two versions: IPv4 (32 bit, 4 billion addresses) and IPv6 (128 bit, 340 undecillion addresses).
IPv4 format: 192.168.1.1 (4 octets, 0-255 range). IPv6 format: 2001:0db8:85a3:0000:0000:8a2e:0370:7334 (8 groups, hex).
Public IP: Accessible over the internet. Private IP: Used in local networks (192.168.x.x, 10.x.x.x, 172.16-31.x.x).
Static IP: Fixed, unchanging. Dynamic IP: Assigned via DHCP, can change. Most home users use dynamic IP.
What is DNS?
DNS (Domain Name System) translates domain names (utilgo.net) to IP addresses (192.168.1.1). Called 'the phone book of the internet.'
DNS resolution process: Browser → DNS cache → ISP DNS → Root DNS → TLD DNS → Authoritative DNS → IP address.
DNS issues: Slow loading, 'site not found' error, wrong site opening. Solution: clear DNS cache, use different DNS server (Cloudflare 1.1.1.1, Google 8.8.8.8).
DNS security: DNS spoofing (fake DNS response), DNS hijacking (changing DNS settings). DNSSEC verifies DNS responses.
Ping and traceroute
Ping: Sends an ICMP packet to a target and measures response time (RTT - Round Trip Time). Used to test connection quality.
Traceroute: Lists all routers (hops) a packet passes through to reach the target. Used to identify where network issues occur.
Ping results: <50ms excellent, 50-100ms good, 100-200ms average, >200ms poor. Packet loss should be 0%.
Traceroute usage: If connection is slow, identify which hop has latency. Usually ISP or remote server side issue.
Network security tips
1. Enable firewall. Use Windows Firewall or third-party firewall.
2. Use VPN on public Wi-Fi. Traffic is encrypted, IP address is hidden.
3. Use DNS over HTTPS (DoH) or DNS over TLS (DoT). DNS queries are encrypted.
4. Update modem/router firmware. Security patches are critical.
5. Change default router password. Default passwords like 'admin/admin' are insecure.
Utilgo IP and network tools
Processing differs between the tools discussed here: some operations run in the browser, while document conversion, video processing and background removal use the server. Read the relevant tool page and privacy information before uploading.
