Excel and CSV Tools Guide: Data Processing and Conversion
Excel and CSV files are the most commonly used formats for data management and analysis. This guide covers Excel/CSV processing, conversion, and data cleaning tools.
Last updated:What is CSV?
CSV (Comma-Separated Values) is a simple text format that stores data in rows and columns. Each row represents a record, each column represents a field. Separated by commas (,).
CSV advantages: Simple, universal, can be opened in any text editor, compatible with Excel, Google Sheets, and databases.
Disadvantages: No formatting, no formulas, no multiple sheets, no data type information (everything is text).
Excel vs CSV
Excel (.xlsx): Formatting, formulas, charts, multiple sheets, data types. Large files, complex structure.
CSV: Simple, lightweight, universal compatibility. Single sheet, no formatting, no formulas.
When to use which: Data analysis and reporting → Excel. Data transfer and backup → CSV. Web applications → CSV (JSON is also an alternative).
Data cleaning tips
1. Remove duplicate rows. Common in CSV files.
2. Clean blank lines. Causes issues in data analysis.
3. Standardize column headers. 'Name', 'İsim', 'Ad' → use a single header.
4. Check data types. Is '123' text or number? CSV has no type information.
5. Check encoding. UTF-8 is safest for CSV. Turkish characters in Excel may require UTF-8 BOM.
