Image Editing Guide: Crop, Rotate, and Background Removal

Image cropping

Cropping cuts out unwanted parts of an image to change the focal point. Commonly used for social media cover images, blog headers, and product photos.

Aspect ratio locking: 1:1 (square), 16:9 (video), 4:3 (classic), 1.91:1 (blog cover). Locking the ratio allows cropping without distorting the image.

Cropping tips: Center the focal point. Keep faces and important objects away from edges. Check resolution after cropping.

Image rotation and flipping

Rotation: Rotate image 90°, 180°, or 270°. Used to fix horizontal/vertical photos.

Flipping: Mirror image horizontally or vertically. Commonly used for selfie photos (camera mirroring effect).

Note: Image quality may decrease after rotation. Especially in JPEG format, every save causes quality loss. Use PNG or WebP.

Background removal

Background removal separates the main subject from the background. Critical for e-commerce product photos, profile photos, and graphic design.

Methods: AI-based (automatic, fast, sufficient in most cases), manual (with selection tool, more precise), color-based (removing a specific color).

Note: AI-based background removal does not work perfectly on every image. Complex backgrounds (hair, transparent objects) may cause issues.

Output: PNG or WebP with transparent background. JPG (white fill) for platforms requiring white background.

Image editing tips

1. Keep the original file. Editing cannot be undone.

2. Create a working copy. Work on a copy while preserving the original.

3. Format selection: PNG/WebP for transparency, JPEG/WebP for photos.

4. Check resolution: Check image quality after editing. Excessive compression causes quality loss.

5. Use batch processing: Editing multiple images with the same settings saves time.

Utilgo image editing tools

Processing differs between the tools discussed here: some operations run in the browser, while document conversion, video processing and background removal use the server. Read the relevant tool page and privacy information before uploading.
