Password Security: Guide to Creating Strong Passwords
Weak passwords are the most common cause of account takeovers. This guide covers strong password creation rules, password managers, and two-factor authentication.

Most common passwords: 123456, password, 123456789, qwerty, abc123, 111111, 12345678, iloveyou, admin, welcome.
These passwords are cracked in seconds. Dictionary attacks try the most common 10,000 passwords in a few seconds.
Passwords derived from personal information (birth date, phone number, name) are also insecure. Social engineering and data breaches easily reveal this information.
Strong password rules
1. Length: At least 12 characters. Each additional character exponentially increases cracking time.
2. Character variety: Mix of uppercase, lowercase, digits, and special characters (!@#$%^&*).
3. Randomness: Do not use meaningful words or patterns. Random character strings are most secure.
4. Uniqueness: Use a different password for each account. If one site is hacked, other accounts remain safe.
5. Timeliness: Change password when suspicious activity is detected. Routine password changes are no longer recommended (NIST 2024).
Password managers
A password manager stores all your passwords in an encrypted vault, accessible with a single master password. Best options: Bitwarden (free, open source), 1Password, Dashlane, KeePass.
Advantages: Generates unique and strong passwords for each site, no need to remember passwords, auto-fill protects against phishing attacks.
The master password must be very strong and never written down. Managers like Bitwarden cannot reset the master password — if you forget it, you lose access to all passwords.
Two-factor authentication (2FA)
2FA adds a second verification step in addition to the password. Most secure methods: Authenticator app (Google Authenticator, Authy, Microsoft Authenticator) and hardware key (YubiKey).
SMS-based 2FA is the least secure option (SIM swap attack). Use authenticator apps or hardware keys when possible.
With 2FA enabled, even if an attacker obtains your password, they cannot access your account. This is the most effective complement to password security.
Utilgo Password Generator
Utilgo Password Generator creates strong passwords with customizable length (8-64 characters), uppercase/lowercase, digits, and special character options. All processing happens in the browser, generated passwords are never sent anywhere.
