Web Security Guide: Passwords, 2FA, and Safe Internet Usage
Internet security is a fundamental skill for protecting personal data and accounts. This guide covers password security, two-factor authentication, phishing attacks, and safe internet usage.
Last updated:Password security basics
Strong password: At least 12 characters, mix of uppercase/lowercase, digits, and special characters. Use a unique password for each account.
Password manager: Tools like Bitwarden, 1Password, Dashlane generate and store strong, unique passwords. Access all accounts with a single master password.
Password sharing: Never share passwords. Do not send passwords via email or messages. Use password manager sharing features.
Two-factor authentication (2FA)
2FA adds a second verification step in addition to the password. Most secure methods: Authenticator app (Google Authenticator, Authy) and hardware key (YubiKey).
SMS-based 2FA is the least secure option (SIM swap attack). Use authenticator apps or hardware keys when possible.
With 2FA enabled, even if an attacker obtains your password, they cannot access your account. Enable on email, banking, and social media accounts.
Phishing attacks
Phishing is an attack that tries to steal user information via fake emails or websites. Common types: email phishing, SMS phishing (smishing), phone phishing (vishing).
Protection: Do not click suspicious links. Check the sender's email address. Your bank or service provider will never ask for your password via email.
URL check: Check the URL in the address bar. Similar domains like 'paypa1.com' (1 instead of l) are used.
HTTPS: There should be a lock icon in the address bar. However, HTTPS alone does not guarantee security — phishing sites also use HTTPS.
Safe internet usage
Public Wi-Fi: Do not perform sensitive transactions (banking, shopping) on public Wi-Fi networks. Use a VPN.
Software updates: Keep operating system, browser, and applications up to date. Security patches are critical.
Antivirus: Use reliable antivirus software. Windows Defender is sufficient for most users.
Backup: Regularly back up important data. Cloud storage + local backup combination is safest.
