Video Tools Guide: Compression, Conversion, and Editing

Video compression

Video compression reduces file size while trying to preserve quality. H.264, H.265 (HEVC), VP9, and AV1 are the most common codecs.

H.264: Most common, most compatible. Works on all devices. Medium compression ratio.

H.265 (HEVC): 50% smaller file size than H.264. Supported on newer devices. Has licensing fees.

VP9: Google's open-source codec. Used on YouTube. Similar compression to H.265.

AV1: Newest codec. 30% smaller file size. Not yet widespread but the future standard.

Video format conversion

MP4: Most common format. Works on all devices and browsers. Ideal for web.

MOV: Apple's format. Native on Mac and iPhone. Limited web support.

WebM: Google's web format. Native in Chrome and Firefox. Used on YouTube.

MKV: Open-source container. Multiple audio/language/subtitle support. Limited web support.

Conversion tips: MP4 (H.264) is the safest output format. Works on all platforms.

Video editing tips

1. Compress first, then edit. Working with large files slows down the process.

2. Choose resolution based on target platform. YouTube 1080p, Instagram 1080x1080, TikTok 1080x1920.

3. Preserve audio quality. Keep audio bitrate at least 128 kbps when compressing video.

4. Choose output format based on platform. MP4 for web, MKV for archiving.

5. Preview before finalizing. Check quality loss after compression.
