Practical guide

Separate campaign links with UTM tags

Prepared by: Gsetsoft · Updated:

An email and a social post can point to the same page while serving different campaigns. UTM tags describe the source of a visit to an analytics system. Adding them does not install tracking: the destination needs an analytics setup that reads those parameters.

Step by step

  1. Enter the full destination URL and check that the page opens. Use the public page rather than an admin address or an untested short link.
  2. Choose consistent names, such as source=newsletter, medium=email and campaign=autumn_2026. Keep spelling and capitalization consistent across the campaign. Leave term and content empty when unnecessary.
  3. Open the generated link in a new tab. Check whether its tags survive any redirects. A redirect that drops the query string can also lose your campaign information.

Example scenario

For https://example.com/catalog?lang=en, the existing lang=en parameter is preserved when you add campaign tags. Two buttons in one newsletter can use content=top_button and content=bottom_button to distinguish their links. example.com is only an illustrative address.

Check your result

An existing UTM parameter with the same name is replaced. Leaving an optional field blank removes that tag from the URL. Tags are visible in the address: do not put names, email addresses, passwords or order access tokens in them. How reports group the values depends on your analytics system.

Frequently asked questions

Do UTM tags improve search rankings?

No. They distinguish campaign sources. Use them for external campaign links rather than tagging your own navigation menus.

Why do spaces look different?

URL encoding changes spaces and certain characters. That is not necessarily an error; open the destination and check that the values are read correctly.
